Bucks And Other Teams Boycott NBA Playoffs, Protests Shooting Of Blake

The NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks led the protest movement in the sports industry over the shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year old Black man who was shot multiple times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The team, which was supposed to have a three-game 5s set yesterday at 4 p.m., boycotted the playoffs.

Although strikes are banned under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, Bucks took the risk. The organization handling Bucks, as well as other teams in the NBA playoffs, supported the players’ decision. The shooting of Blake became the latest incident to cause nationwide outrage over police brutality and racism. It followed the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black American man killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota by the police.

“We fully support our players and the decision they made. Although we did not know beforehand, we would have wholeheartedly agreed with them. The only way to bring change is to shine a light on the racial injustices that are happening in front of us. Our players have done that and we will continue to stand alongside them and demand accountability and change,” the Bucks said in a statement.

Prior to the playoffs boycott, NBA coaches, players, and referees showed their solidarity during the national anthem before every game after the shooting incident. Coaches are seen wearing pins with the phrase “Coaches Against Racial Inequality” on them. Adding to these are vocal interviews of players and coaches speaking about issues outside basketball.

Hours after the announcement from Bucks, three WNBA games, five Major League Soccer, and three Major League Baseball games were also postponed as athletes supported the decision of Bucks’ players.
